LIMÓN DANCE COMPANY

A modern dance company celebrating 80 years of history while boldly visioning a transformative future

Limón Dance Company (LDC) channels movement as a force for cultural dialogue, using choreography to reveal the connections that transcend difference and shape a transformative future. Since its founding in 1946 by José Limón and Doris Humphrey, the Company has been at the vanguard of modern dance, becoming the first to tour internationally under the U.S. State Department, the first modern dance company to perform at Lincoln Center, and has performed twice at the White House. In recognition of its impact, the José Limón Dance Foundation—encompassing the Company and Institute—received the National Medal of the Arts in 2008.

Mexican-born Limón was a pioneering force of the 20th century, establishing the first modern dance repertory company in the United States. Limón’s choreography holds a special place in American culture for its social awareness, exploring the common threads that connect us across communities. More than 50 years after his passing, Limón’s repertoire—celebrated for its visual clarity, theatricality, and rhythmic life—remains a vital influence on the evolution of the art form. Today, the Company carries forward that ethos by commissioning works from both critically acclaimed and emerging international voices, including artists such as Diego Vega Solorza, Aszure Barton, Raúl Tamez, Kayla Farrish, and many more.

The Company’s 80th Anniversary Season marks a bold moment of reflection and expansion. Its intergenerational programming honors Limón’s timeless legacy while engaging deeply with today’s cultural lens, exploring themes of masculinity, identity, queerness, and cultural lineage. Through landmark new work commissions and powerful cultural partnerships, the 80th Anniversary solidifies the Company’s voice as one of the most vital within the landscape of American and global dance.

In this season of worldwide pain, Limón’s work is balm and anchor. Limón’s work is heroic; the legacy of his movement and musicality continues to honor him.
