SOZO Forum: Room for Light

A Curated Gathering on the Future of Artist Empowerment and the Inspiration Economy

Tuesday, June 16, 2026
Noon-7pm PST

Mama Dog Studios | 700 26th St, Oakland, CA 94612

Artists generate inspiration—the civic technology that drives belonging, empathy, and collective imagination. Yet the systems meant to sustain this work remain structurally undercapitalized.

California ranks 35th in per-capita arts funding; the California Arts Council distributes just $21M annually—63% less (inflation-adjusted) than 25 years ago. In Oakland, where artists power neighborhood vitality and innovation in one of the nation’s most expensive regions, this gap is deeply structural.

SOZO Forum: Room For Light convenes artists, culture workers and cross-sector leaders for a day of systems-level inquiry and professional development, equipping participants with insights, tools, and relationships that strengthen creative labor and the broader ecosystem–locally and nationally.

The day-long program features conversation over meals, a panel, mini performances, and small-group sessions, asking the following questions:

  • What are the conditions of an empowered artist?

  • What’s possible when we move from institutional preservation to sustainability of the creative ecosystem with artists at the center?

  • In the coming decade, what will fuel artistic and cultural innovation toward social good?
